Free Write Dialogue. Week 2.

Free write is unruled writing. It has no rules, walls, or boundaries. It's a continuous time of writing that allows the extra thoughts in your head a place to unload. It helps the student organize the brain and the unconscious thoughts that bounce around through the days. It clears space for room to keep more important organized thoughts. Free write helps put ideas out on "paper" and then later on, the student is able to look back and organize the ideas and form them into a paper.

One thing that struck my eye was the part about clearing the mind of these toxic fragments of thought. I've always been one to "doodle" on any type of writing material. I'm thinking now that it was my subconscious thoughts that needed to be deleted from my brain to clear out the space in order to keep the chaos down. I found that this week, when doing a free write, I was able to express in writing, my thoughts that had been bothering me. I noticed that once I wrote them out a few times, the idea didn't come up out of thin air as much. I guess free writing is a cheap low dose therapy!

  1. Hi Ariana,

I like the point you make about the freewrite allowing a writer to put an idea on paper to later review in order to make a decision about its usefulness. Many writers try to produce an essay solely from the ideas in their mind. It ends up producing an essay that is dis-organized and that contains ideas that never should have made its way into the essay. Like Elbow says, the freewrite allows writers to see if an idea is "garbage." It's much better to decide an idea is "garbage" before it ends up in the essay. It's also good to determine if an idea should be a main point, so that it can be later showcased in an essay.

    Thanks for your insights.

  3. Hello Arian,
I like the thought about clearing one’s mind from toxic fragments of thoughts. I really sometime think that keeping up with freewriting might not only aid me in writing well, but to keep my mind off those things that keep brothering me. Once a problem is on paper they don’t seem to be as big or at least they can be put down so I don’t feel that I’m going to forget them and they keep coming up at times that I’m unable to handle them. Funny how writing can aid you not only with writing well, but with other areas of your life.
